Celebrating Adult Education and Family Literacy Week
Celebrating Adult Education and Family Literacy Week
September 15–19, 2025
Kodiak College proudly joins the Kodiak Island Borough and communities across the state in celebrating Alaska Adult Education and Family Literacy Week - a time to recognize the transformative power of adult education and the individuals who dedicate themselves to building a more educated, empowered Alaska.
Kodiak Island Borough's Proclamation
On behalf of the Kodiak Island Borough, Mayor Scott Arndt issued a formal proclamation
recognizing the week of September 15-19, 2025, as Adult Education and Family Literacy
Week. The proclamation highlights the long-standing contributions of Alaska’s adult
education and literacy programs, which have supported Alaskans since 1942 through
GED testing, English language learning, and citizenship preparation.
In the words of the proclamation:
“The Kodiak Regional Adult Education program, housed at Kodiak College, offers adults on Kodiak Island the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge for education, employment, and citizenship; to increase self-image and self-direction; and to progress toward future personal, career, training and/or college goals.”
Lifelong Learning in Kodiak
At Kodiak College, the Adult Education Program plays a vital role in shaping brighter
futures for adults in our island community. Whether preparing for the GED, improving
reading and writing, gaining English language skills, or working toward job readiness
and college entry, our program meets students where they are and walks beside them
every step of the way.
Each year, more than 2,500 Alaskans participate in adult education programs statewide, and here on Kodiak Island, we serve a diverse population that includes working adults, parents, and others seeking new opportunities.
“Adult Education is the quiet engine of transformation on our island,” said Jacelyn Keys, Director of Kodiak College. “It gives people a second chance, sometimes a first chance, to claim their goals, gain confidence, and write their future. Whether it's helping someone earn their GED, learn English, or prepare for a job, we are here to walk alongside our neighbors as they pursue their dreams.”
Building Stronger Communities Through Literacy
Adult education isn't just about academics - it’s about strengthening families, fueling
the workforce, and growing local leadership. Many of Kodiak College’s students enroll
in college courses, enter apprenticeships, or contribute to Kodiak’s economy in healthcare,
maritime pursuits, education, and more.
As we celebrate this special week, we honor our adult learners for their courage, our educators for their commitment, and our community for its continued support.
