Quick Database Guide

Listed below are a number of databases that are likely to be useful to students doing research on a wide variety of topics. All of these resources are free to students and available at any computer via the internet using your UAA username and password. These particular databases have been historically helpful to many students in a variety of disciplines. There are many other databases available, and the library staff is happy to help you navigate the system.

Student Resources in Context (Gale): SRIC is a valuable all-purpose database with resources in almost every discipline studied. It allows you to search a topic and then breaks down the results in an easy to use format. Academic journals, magazines, radio news, and video news are separated and quantified as part of the simple search.

Points of View Reference Center (EBSCOhost): PoVRC contains popular, scholarly, and news based articles outlining opposing sides of many contemporary issues. This database is great for discussion and debate papers and presentations.

LearningExpress Library (EBSCO): This database is collection of tutorials, practice tests and test prep books. You can take tutorials in writing, math, software, and other disciplines. Practice tests and test prep books cover the Nursing Entrance Exam, NCLEX, GRE, GED, and many others.

greenFILE (EBSCOhost): This is an environmental studies database with information on topics including recycling, alternate energy, climate change, and environmental ethics. Its sources include academic journals, books, magazines, and more.

Newsbank: This database allows access to hundreds of U.S and international newspapers and their archives. The Kodiak Daily Mirror is available here.

Listen Alaska/Alaska Digital Library (Overdrive): Listen Alaska is a service that allows you to check out ebooks for a number of different ereaders (kindle, Epub, PDF, etc) as well as audio books. You can borrow materials for up to 21 days and download them to your computer or mobile device.

Anatomy & Physiology Online and Anatomy TV (Ovid): Both of these databases have interactive 3D models and structures. You can study and build a body from the circulatory system up to the skin.

Biography Reference Center (EBSCOhost): This database provides information on over 500,000 people from numerous sources. A single person may have over a hundred different profiles highlighting different aspects of their lives. It covers people from ancient times to present day.

Ebrary College Complete (Ebrary): This is a collection of over 40,000 electronic titles that you can download to read, or save as a PDF. The topics covered are very diverse. Many of these ebooks will show up in a library catalog search.

eBook Collection (EBSCOhost): This database is similar to Ebrary and works the same way, but has a different set of resources.

Academic Video Online (Alexander Street): This database replaced VAST and has over 50,000 videos concerning a wide variety of topics. Formats include news reports, how-to videos, documentaries, and many more.

Consumer Health Complete (EBSCOhost): This is a fairly comprehensive guide to health issues and resources such as, prescription and non-prescription drug information, information on conditions and diseases, and fact sheets and pamphlets.
