Placement Information

Placement Tests

Placement testing is designed to give students and advisors information that will be useful for ensuring that students take the correct college courses. Kodiak College uses both cognitive assessments, which measure skills in reading, writing, and math, and non-cognitive assessments which measure student's ability to be a strategic learner. Most new students and some returning students will need to take a placement test before they register for classes. There are three placement tests to assess a student’s skills: ACCUPLACER (reading and writing), ALEKS (math), and LASSI (strategic learning).

Does every student have to take a placement test?

No and some students may only need a writing or a math placement test.  For example, students who place into college-level writing on the SAT or ACT do not need to take the Accuplacer. Students who have already completed college-level (100 level+) math and writing courses must submit official transcripts to be evaluated for course placement. Seek advising from Student Services if you are unsure if you need either the ACCUPLACER or the ALEKS.
