New students and students who have not taken classes in the University of Alaska system for 2 years or more need to apply for admission. Students must apply for admission before they can register for classes.

Placement Tests
Placement testing is designed to give students and advisors information that will be useful for ensuring that students take the correct college courses. Kodiak College staff and faculty consider multiple measures to place students including cognitive assessments, which measure skills in reading, writing, and math. We also consider other factors, like high school courses taken and high school GPA, and students' attitudes towards math and writing. Most new students and some returning students will need to take one or more placement tests before they register for classes. The placement tests used to assess a student’s skills are the ACCUPLACER for reading and writing and the ALEKS for math.
Does every student have to take a placement test?
No and some students may only need a writing or a math placement test. To help advisors determine what tests, if any, are needed, students start the placement process by taking the Kodiak College Course Matching Survey. The survey is free and your advisor will review the results when you are done.

The B.S. in Natural Sciences is a popular choice for students who are interested in pursuing careers in STEM teaching at the secondary school level as the breadth of the program provides them with the qualifications and skills that they need to obtain and to excel in such positions.
The flexible nature of this degree has made it popular with a wide variety of Science students and it is often combined with a minor in a second discipline such as Psychology, Physics, or Mathematics. The three options associated with the degree are intended to maintain this flexibility while still ensuring that students who wish to use it as a stepping stone towards a biological, environmental, or medical career are able to do so.

The Department of Health Sciences offers a variety of human science, biological, occupational,
and certificate programs to prepare students to succeed and be equipped for further
studies in many health care professions. We employ a problem-solving approach model.
Students are taught the basic principles of scientific facts and theories regarding
the human animal. They learn the ability to analyze data or a problem, generate possible
solutions, implement a plan, and assess the outcome. With these skills, they are able
to incorporate scientific fact with patient care. Most of our teaching professionals
maintain outside employment in their field of specialty and are able to share not
only their knowledge but clinical expertise.

As a partner in shaping health care for Alaska, the UAA School of Nursing educates students for current and future roles in local, state, national, and worldwide arenas. Medical Assisting Certificate
Medical assistants are multi-skilled health professionals specifically educated to work primarily in ambulatory care settings, such as physician offices, clinics, and outpatient care centers under the direct supervision of physicians, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants. Medical assistants perform both administrative and clinical duties.
Kodiak College offers the many of the pre and corequisite courses for the Medical Assisting Certificate Program.

- Medical Coding
Kodiak College offers many fully distance courses needed for an Occupational Endorsement Certificate in Medical Office Coding, an Allied Health Program in the UAA College of Health. This program provides training for allied health professionals specifically designed to prepare graduates for work in rewarding careers in Alaska’s rapidly growing health care industry.
Allied health professionals, such as medical coders, are involved with the delivery of health related services pertaining to the identification, evaluation and prevention of diseases and disorders, rehabilitation, and health systems management, among others.
This Occupational Endorsement Certificate program prepares student for careers as professional medical coders. In addition, it prepares students to become certified medical coders by the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC).

The Social Sciences Pathway includes major and degree programs that explore the complexity of human behavior via empirical methodologies to better understand interpersonal, institutional, societal, and cultural dynamics. This Pathway prepares students to work for social justice and help people in their communities.
- Anthropology
Anthropology is the holistic, comparative study of human diversity. The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Anthropology provides students with a solid foundation in the contemporary theory, practice, and application of the discipline and an understanding of global human diversity with a special emphasis on the cultures, lifeways, and contemporary social issues of Alaska and the Circumpolar North. The program prepares students in intercultural fluency, critical thinking, and research skills through coursework, applied research experiences, and fieldwork. Graduates find opportunities in education, health care, museums, social services, international development agencies, governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, marketing, and publishing.

Get your undergraduate welding certificate in a hands-on program that prepares you for diverse careers in the welding industry.
The occupational endorsement certificate in welding provides an overview of the various welding processes. The program includes hands-on instruction in different welding techniques using a variety of materials. When you complete your certificate you’ll be ready for entry-level positions in the welding industry. A total of 15 credits are required for the occupational endorsement certificate. Follow these steps to make the most of your Financial Aid opportunities:
Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA)
STEP ONE - File your FAFSA! This is how you apply for the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Student Loans and Federal Work-Study. If you complete it by June 30th you are also applying for State of Alaska student aid.
Even if you don't think you will qualify for grants, or don't desire to take out loans, having an FAFSA on file is required to be considered for state grants and university scholarships.

Scholarships & Other Funding Sources
STEP TWO - Research and apply for scholarships and other types of supplemental financial aid. These include campus-based scholarships and tuition waivers, University of Alaska scholarships, community and tribal scholarships, and potential regional and national funding opportunities.
Scholarships are based on a variety of criteria, and not all require financial need or an exceptional GPA.

Please be aware that students using financial aid must meet strict academic requirements to maintain eligibility for future assistance. Once eligibility is lost, it can be very difficult to regain. Eligibility is reviewed by the UAA Office of Student Financial Assistance after every semester. Students not meeting requirements will receive ONE warning semester before being deemed ineligible.
