Kodiak College Awarded CAMP Grant

Kodiak College is proud to announce that it has been awarded the College Assistance Migrant Programs (CAMP) Grant. This grant cycle marks the first time an institution in the state of Alaska has received CAMP funding, setting a significant milestone for higher education in the region.  University of Alaska Anchorage and Kenai Peninsula College were also awarded CAMP grants.

The CAMP Grant, administered by the U.S. Department of Education, is designed to support students from migrant and seasonal farmworker/fishing backgrounds as they transition into their first year of college. This program provides financial assistance, academic support, and resources aimed at ensuring the success of these students in higher education.

Alaska is home to the sixth largest population of migrant education students in the United States. Unlike the majority of CAMP grants in the lower 48 states, which are primarily focused on agricultural activities, Kodiak College's CAMP grant will be tailored to Alaska's migrant and seasonal worker population in commercial and subsistence fishing and mariculture.

Jacelyn Keys, Director of Kodiak College, expressed her enthusiasm for the grant, stating, "This is an exciting moment for Kodiak College. The CAMP Grant will enable us to provide targeted support to students who have historically faced significant barriers to higher education."

The CAMP Grant will enable Kodiak College to offer a range of services to eligible students, including:

  • Financial Assistance: Scholarships, stipends, and other forms of financial aid to help cover tuition, books, and living expenses.
  • Academic Support: Dedicated tutoring, mentoring, and academic advising to help students navigate their coursework and achieve their academic goals.
  • Financial Literacy: Workshops and programs to prepare students for successful financial skills in college and beyond.
  •  Community Building: Programs and events designed to build a strong sense of community and support among CAMP students.

University of Alaska Anchorage Chancellor, Sean Parnell, added,"Our university creates opportunity through education. This grant underscores our commitment to making post-secondary training affordable and accessible. The collaborative work led by Kodiak College empowers students to achieve success in Alaska’s workforce, and make a positive impact in our communities.”

The CAMP Grant will be implemented starting in the upcoming academic year, with a dedicated team at Kodiak College overseeing the program's rollout and ensuring that eligible students receive the support they need to succeed.
