Student Government Supports Campus Food Pantry
In 2022, Kodiak College’s food pantry was established by Alaska Native Studies (AKNS) faculty member and Cama'i Club Advisor, Libby Eufemio, through a grant from Afognak Cares. The pantry provided essential snacks and food items for students to eat while studying or take home. However, after the initial grant funds were depleted, the pantry struggled to stay stocked, relying primarily on donations from dedicated staff, faculty, and Cama’i Club members, with Eufemio herself being the chief contributor.
This academic year, the Kodiak College Student Government authorized an initial expenditure of $1,000 for the Student Food Pantry. The funds will be used to restock the pantry with essentials such as coffee, tea, hot chocolate, oatmeal, soups, mac and cheese, shelf-stable milk, and other convenient snacks.
The Student Government initiative seeks to continue the work started by Eufemio and Cama’i Club to provide a reliable source of food to support Kodiak College students during their busy academic schedules. By ensuring access to food on campus, they hope to create a more welcoming and supportive environment, reducing barriers to success.
The food pantry has three locations where food is available to all students: The Kodiak Campus Center lobby, the Library in Benny Benson, and the Adult Education office suite. Offerings are designed to meet immediate needs during time students spend at the college in class or while studying and to take home if needed.
