The Kodiak Oral History Project is a collection of audio recordings detailing the life histories of long-time Kodiak residents. Dr. Gary Stevens, professor of History at Kodiak College for 25 years, was director of the Kodiak Oral History Project from 1990 to 1996.

Dr. Stevens was born and raised in Oregon and earned his doctorate from the University of Oregon in 1984. He came to Kodiak as General Manager for Northern Processors prior to joining the faculty at Kodiak College. Dr. Stevens also has enjoyed a long career in public service as Mayor of the City of Kodiak, Kodiak Island Borough Mayor, Representative in the Alaska State House. He currently is a state senator and has served in the Senate since 2003

As noted on his Alaska State Legislature homepage, Dr. Stevens has a held lifelong interest in Alaska History. The Kodiak Oral History Project attests to that fact. Under the direction of Dr. Stevens, students enrolled in his Alaska History classes interviewed more than 120 Kodiak residents using cassette tape recorders. In 1996, Dr. Stevens transferred the collection of oral histories, including transcripts, releases, and the original tape recordings, to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Oral History Project are archived.

In 2015, Kodiak College, with support from the Department of Education Title III program, digitized the audio recordings. Now the public can listen to the recordings and read the transcripts online.
