Kodiak College recently held elections for its Student Government Association (SGA), ushering in a new executive board and team of senators committed to enhancing student life on campus. The newly elected officers are:

SGA Executive Board

  • President: Payton Callahan
  • Vice-President: Mark Vizcocho
  • Secretary: Jade Moore
  • Treasurer: KC Suralta

Senators

  • Thomas Anthony Bobier
  • Charlene Solano
  • Jonni Myers
  • Tessa Davis

After being sworn in, the SGA members wasted no time diving into discussions about future initiatives. A key topic on the agenda was the proposal to raise the student government fee to increase support services for students. However, the SGA made it clear that any fee increase must be accompanied by added value to students beyond hosting programs and events. They emphasized the importance of providing tangible resources and support for students.

Among the ideas floated were:

  • Financially supporting the student food pantry
  • Working to find a partner to provide mental healthcare and counseling services
  • Offering sexual health and period products in restrooms
  • Working on the Constitution and Bylaws for the SGA so they can be reviewed by the College Director, Chancellor, and UA President.
  • Legislative travel to advocate for funding for UA and Kodiak College.
  • Increased funding for club projects

In light of these discussions, the student government unanimously voted to raise the student activities fee. They will request a consolidated fee of $20 per credit to fund these programs and initiatives, with the change, if approved, taking effect in Spring Semester 2025.

The SGA also set their regular meeting schedule, selecting every other Thursday night at 7 p.m. for gatherings in Benny Benson rooms 106/107. The upcoming meeting dates are as follows:

  • September 12
  • September 26
  • October 10
  • October 24
  • November 7
  • November 21
  • December 5
  • December 19 (pending need)

With a strong leadership team in place and a clear vision for enhancing student life, the new Kodiak College SGA looks set to make significant strides in the upcoming year.
